According to a database compiled and updated by The Guardian, 690 people have been killed by law enforcement officers so far this year. Of these people, 178 were black. 55 of the 178 were unarmed.
Following the murder of Trayvon Martin, and the acquisition of George Zimmerman in 2012, the hashtag Black Lives Matter showed up all over the internet as a statement against these repetitive killings.
As an organization, Black Lives Matter has continued its action against modern systemic racism and discrimination. From July 24th to July 26th, Black Lives Matter hosted the first ever Movement for Black Lives National Convening in Cleveland, Ohio.
Reporters Emma Rizzo and Faith Meckley sat down with Phoebe Brown, an Ithaca resident who attended the event, and interviewed her for the August 6th, 2015 edition of the show. The following interview includes content that was not aired on the show.
