Discovery of shipwreck in Seneca Lake (Canal Corportation)

SCHUYLER COUNTY, NY -- Explorers are attempting to find history nearly 400 feet deep in Seneca Lake.

The Seneca Lake Archaeological and Bathymetric Survey Project is taking pictures of sunken, 19th century shipwrecks.

Remote Operated Vehicle technology will take underwater pictures of the shipwrecks. The ultimate goal is to improve knowledge of the Erie Canal in advance of its bicentennial in 2025.

Previous expeditions into the Lake in 2018 and 2019 found 16 shipwrecks. This includes the only known packet boat in existence.
