Ithaca Seeks to Replace Stephen Smith on Common Council

ITHACA, NY -- The City of Ithaca is seeking to replace Common Council member Stephen Smith, who suddenly resigned from his elected position on August 8th.

Smith represented Ithaca’s 4th ward for the last nine years. His abrupt departure was in order for him to follow his wife to New York City, where she will be entering a doctoral program in education.

The Common Council will be replacing Smith in a way similar to a job application. Residents of the 4th Ward interested in Smith’s position should submit a letter of interest and resume to the City Clerk, Julie Conley Holcomb, at jholcomb@cityofithaca.org. Applications are due no later than September 3rd.

All expressions of interest will be reviewed by a Selection Committee. The committee will then put a recommendation before the Common Council for a full vote. The selected applicant will serve on the Common Council until December 31st  2022.

In their announcement to fill Smith’s seat, the City of Ithaca thanked him for his years of service.
