On Saturday, Acting Ithaca Mayor Laura Lewis formally announced her campaign to remain in the Mayor’s office. According to WENY, Lewis took office after the resignation of longtime Mayor Svante Myrick. The city will host a special election in November with the winner filling the remainder of the mayoral term. The current term concludes at the end of 2023. Lewis’s plan to finish the term was first confirmed by the Ithaca Voice last month.

Schuyler County Public Health is hosting a COVID vaccine clinic this Friday at the Watkins Glen Community Center. The clinic will be open from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and will be available to all residents 5 and older. Walk-ins will be accepted till 4:30. On Sunday, state officials announced New York has hit its lowest COVID positivity rate since July 18th. According to LocalSYR, the state’s current positivity rate is at 1.36 percent. New York has now held it’s positivity rate under two percent for ten consecutive days. New York began to ease COVID restrictions last month when Governor Kathy Hochul ended the state’s mask-or-vaccine mandate. Local schools have also ended mask requirements.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is launching an investigation into whether corporations are using the pandemic and inflation as an excuse to unfairly raise prices. According to Mid-Hudson News, the investigation will attempt to determine if recent price hikes are the result of increased costs or corporate greed. The process could allow James to implement new price gouging rules.
