On Friday local activists gathered at the Bernie Milton Pavilion in downtown Ithaca to demand action on the city’s Green New Deal. According to the Ithaca Voice, the event was attended by multiple advocacy groups including Sunrise Ithaca, Ithaca High School’s Green Team, and the Ithaca DSA. Also in attendance was Luis Aguirre-Torres, the City of Ithaca Sustainability Director. The event was part of a “Global Climate Strike” with hundreds of similar events occurring around the world.

Next week the City of Ithaca will begin street cleaning operations. Street cleaning will begin on Monday April 4th, and conclude on Friday April 29th. The city is urging residents to look out for parking signs and to check on their cars daily during that time. Streets will be posted as “no parking zones” 24 hours prior to cleaning. Any cars still parked on the road will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Work is being done on Elmira Road beginning today. The current project is meant to replace traffic signals on the road. While the road will remain open in both directions flaggers will be responsible for controlling traffic at the intersections. Drivers should expect delays. The work should be completed by April 15th.

On Saturday members of the state legislature’s Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus proposed a 10-point plan for public safety. According to Spectrum News the proposal would include additional funding for mental health services, anti-gun violence programs, youth programs, shorter wait times for mass transit, expanded access to education, and provide public schools with more psychologists and social workers. The proposal comes after multiple state leaders have pursued changes to New York’s bail law. Governor Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have supported measures to expand the use of bail.
