Two republicans have filed enough signatures to appear on the Republican Primary Ballot for Ithaca’s Special Mayoral Election. According to the Ithaca Voice, conservative activist Zachary Winn and William Metro, better known as “Magic Man” are the only two republican candidates who have filed designating petitions with the Board of Elections. Winn has filed a “general objection” with the Board of Elections challenging the validity of Metro’s signatures. On the Democratic side, acting mayor Laura Lewis is running to fill the final year of the mayor’s term.

Cornell University is touting the recently admitted class of 2026 as being “talented and diverse.” According to the Cornell Daily Sun, the school announced the admission of a little over 4,900 students from all 50 U.S. states and 85 countries. Over 57 percent of students were self-identified from underrepresented minority groups. Nearly 20 percent of admittees are first generation college students.

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon has confirmed the new BA2.12 variant of COVID-19 is present in the county. According to Syracuse.com, BA2.12 is more infectious than the BA.2 variant which is currently the dominant strain in the state and country. Both the BA.2 and BA2.12 strains are more infectious than the Omicron variant which caused a massive spike throughout the country at the beginning of the year.

A report out of Upstate Medical University says that over 7,000 New Yorkers die every year due to workplace hazards. The report says work related cancers and circulatory diseases made up the majority of deaths for both men and women. In total, the report says there are 2 million cases of work related diseases every year in New York. The report says this is an epidemic “hidden in plain sight.”
