The Tompkins County Mental Health Department is promoting the new 988 suicide and crisis lifeline. People can dial 988 to speak with crisis counselors 24/7. Deputy Mental Health Commissioner Harmony Ayers Friedlander called the launch a “game changer for our community.” The 988 number is also available for someone with a family member or friend in need of support. Friedlander went on to say that 988 provides “a quick, anonymous, and easy way to connect to a caring and supportive counselor.”
On Wednesday, a video surfaced of an Ithaca woman being attacked by a rabid fox. According to Hudson Valley Post, the video was first shared by CBS 21 meteorologist Steve Knight. Relatives of the woman say she is fine and sought treatment right away. Officials say the fox was caught and put down. New York state leads the nation in cases of Rabies.
On Tuesday, New York State released new minimum requirements to obtain a concealed carry permit. According to Spectrum News, the state will require 16 hours of in-person classroom instruction and 2 hours of live-fire training. Applicants must also receive an 80 percent or higher on a written exam and pass a shooting drill. New York’s previous concealed carry laws which required the applicant to show “proper cause” for the weapon were struck down by the Supreme Court earlier this year.
