The Tompkins County Office for Aging is updating its list of workers who are willing to plow or shovel snow for older adults in the coming winter months. The community service helps older residents who are unable to remove snow or ice from their sidewalks without assistance. Volunteers are especially needed in rural areas outside of the city of Ithaca. Potential workers can call 607-274-5482 to inquire about a volunteer or paid role.
The Ithaca Times reports that the Tompkins County Alcohol and Drug Center will open a new facility in Lansing in January. The open access detox center will provide people with walk-in resources 24 hours a day 7 days a week, without requiring an appointment. The center is mainly for treating substance abuse disorders, but aid, information, food, showers, and shelter will also be provided to anyone in need. The center will hire around 40 staff members including social workers and medical staff. Executive Director Angela Sullivan, says the center is on schedule and on budget, and that the majority of the costs will be paid for through Medicaid or third-parties.
The Times Union reports that a New York State mental health program for teens has been delayed due to staffing shortages. The Youth Assertive Community Treatment program will provide medical and psychiatric services for 10 to 21 year olds who are at risk of incarceration or homelessness. The program was created amidst an explosion of reports and hospitalizations of teens suffering with mental health issues after the Covid-19 pandemic. Nineteen program groups were granted funding, and 15 of the groups were slated to launch on July 1st. Currently, only 5 are in operation.
