Friday is the last day to register to vote in the upcoming November 8 election. Residents of Tompkins County will be voting for NY Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Comptroller. Races are also being held for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, New York State Senate and Assembly, Tompkins County Sheriff and Clerk. Residents in the city of Ithaca will be voting for Mayor and Fourth Ward Alderperson. New York voters will also be weighing in on The Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act of 2022 which would set aside $4.2 billion in state funds for pollution and flood-risk reduction, land conservation, and wastewater management. The city of Ithaca is moving closer to adopting a municipal energy supply program. The proposed Community Choice Aggregation law would allow local consumers to buy electricity and natural gas collectively through the city’s program. Ithaca’s Planning and Economic Development Committee will hold a public hearing about the proposed law at its next meeting on October 19. More information can be found at cityofithaca.org.
And, sadly, a man fell into Ithaca Falls yesterday and died. Thirty five year old Harish Nekkalapu of Windsor, Ontario had been climbing at the base of the falls to take a picture when he slipped and fell. Several bystanders successfully pulled him from the water and he was brought to the Cayuga Medical Center. He later died from injuries he sustained in the fall.
