- Wildlife Hunting Contests Ban Passes State Legislature -
A bipartisan bill banning most wildlife hunting contests passed both houses of the state legislature last month. The proposed law prohibits competitions that hunt coyotes, squirrels, and other wildlife species. The Albany Times Union reports violators could face fines of $500 to $2,000. It includes exemptions for contests hunting white-tailed deer, fish, bear and turkey. ABC News reports similar bans have been enacted in eight other states. Proponents of the bill say it will end wasteful killings of wildlife that are incentivized by cash prizes. Opponents say it unfairly limits hunters’ rights. The bill must be signed by Governor Kathy Hochul to take effect.
- Odessa Resident Gets Standing Ovation On America’s Got Talent -
An Odessa resident got a standing ovation on the hit TV show America’s Got Talent. Holly Campbell sang a duet with Kim Scadlock of Oregon in an episode that aired last week. The Odessa File reports they became close friends through an organ donation. Campbell donated her baby son’s heart to Scadlock’s son in 2007. The show’s judges unanimously voted to send the duo to the next round of the competition.
- $1 million lottery ticket sold at Ithaca Mirabito store -
A $1 million lottery ticket was sold at an Ithaca convenience store last week. The Ithaca Voice reports an unidentified person bought the winning ticket at the Mirabito on North Fulton Street. The winning Mega Millions numbers were announced last Tuesday but it’s unclear if anyone has claimed the prize yet.
