Celebrate Women with WRFI this Month
The month of March is Women’s History Month - a time to celebrate women of all backgrounds and recognize the struggle for equality is not over.
The first celebration of the fight for women’s rights was held on February 28th, 1909. The occasion was organized by the Socialist Party of America to commemorate the 1908 Garment Workers Strike in New York City. Women’s Day became a global day of recognition and celebration in 1975 when the UN recognized the holiday, and in 1977 the UN General Assembly marked March 8th as UN Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace.
Unlike most countries of the world, the United States does not guarantee women equal protection under the law. We recognize women’s fight for equality and social, civil, and reproductive rights—including rights for women of color, disabled women, members of the LGBTQ+ community. We hear women around the world—and here in the US—as they struggle for equal pay, access to healthcare, and an improved quality of life.
WRFI Community Radio is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month and the women in our lives. Over the next few weeks, many WRFI DJs will host special shows celebrating women. Listen in as we uplift women's voices this month.
