- State Senate passes bill banning permits for new gas extraction method -
The New York State Senate voted to ban permits for natural gas extraction using carbon dioxide. The bill was introduced by Senator Lea Webb of the 52nd district which includes Binghamton and Ithaca. It came after a Texas-based company, Southern Tier Solutions began approaching landowners about leasing their property for drilling late last year. The company described the process as an alternative to hydro-fracking which was permanently banned in New York state in 2021. The new bill is waiting for the governor’s signature.
- Ithaca Carshare resumes operations -
Ithaca Carshare is back in business. The nonprofit began accepting memberships again on March 1. It stopped operating last May when their cars couldn’t be insured because of a state regulatory issue. The problem could only be fixed with new legislation which Governor Hochul signed in September. Carshares are an alternative transportation option that allows people to borrow cars or other vehicles left in designated places around the city.
- Some Wegman’s stores will close during April 8 eclipse -
Some Wegman’s stores across New York will close from 3-3:30 during the solar eclipse on April 8. They include the Ithaca, Johnson City, Elmira, and Corning stores. Parts of the Southern Tier are in the eclipse’s path of totality. Other areas will experience a partial eclipse.
