BorgWarner Manufacturing Facility On Warren Road To Close

BorgWarner announced it is closing one of its facilities in Lansing. The automotive parts manufacturer told the Ithaca Voice the company will close a valve part production site on Warren Road by the end of 2024.It is also closing a technical center at the same location. It’s not known how many employees will be affected by the closures. BorgWarner employs about 1500 people and is one of the largest employers in Tompkins County.

Ithaca Gets $1.3 Million For Flood Mitigation

The City of Ithaca is getting 1.3 million federal dollars for new flood protection measures. A joint statement from New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand says it will be used for the design and construction of flood barriers and the storm water systems. The efforts will reduce the risk of 100-year flood damage to commercial and residential property.

Elmira and Chemung County Swear in New Officers and Deputies

Communities across the country are having trouble recruiting law enforcement personnel but last week the Elmira Police Department swore in 8 new officers—a record in recent times. According to WETM the rookies won’t be patrolling the community anytime soon. They’ll first do five months training at the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy followed by 12 weeks of on the job training with experienced personnel. The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office also swore in nine new deputies. 

Ithaca Man Sentenced for Exploitation  

Remanu Phillips, 32, also known as Panther on Piano, has been sentenced to more than 26 years in prison. The Ithaca man pled guilty in 2022 to federal charges of sexual exploitation of a child. After his prison term Phillips will serve another 30 years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.
