More Suspensions for Cornell Protestors-

The student encampment at Cornell remains in place. On Friday four students were temporarily suspended for their participation in the self-described “Liberation Zone.” According to the Ithaca Voice, Cornell administration announced Saturday that more students would be suspended and that referrals to human resources  are being made for staff and faculty who are participating. Cornell’s VP for University Relations Joel Molina said in a letter that the encampment represents a disruption for students in nearby classes. Organizers with the Coalition for Mutual Liberation responded that the administration’s actions are an attempt to “erase protesters’ diverse identities, and our unity against genocide.” A recent referendum among Cornell undergraduates showed overwhelming support for a ceasefire in Gaza and divestment from military contractors supplying Israel’s war machine.

Wells College to Permanently Close-

Wells College in Aurora has announced that it will permanently close effective at the end of this semester. In their announcement the college’s president and board chair said the institution doesn’t have the financial resources to continue operating. The college says it has entered into an agreement with Manhattanville University in Harrison, NY to support students and protect the Wells’ legacy. Manhattanville will help students with housing and academic transfers. Financial pressure on smaller colleges is widespread. Ithaca College recently reduced its faculty by more than 110 full time equivalents and let go many non faculty staff as well.

Delays Expected on Rt. 79 East of Ithaca-

New York State Electric and Gas will be working on a natural gas main along Route 79, east of Ithaca.  According to 14850.com, work began today and will result in lane closures and slowed traffic for the next 8-12 weeks.
