More information:

A podcast is generally defined as an episodic series of digital media files which can be heard through terrestrial (radio) services or downloaded via the internet (RSS). While podcast content can be about most anything, the more successful shows are narrative based entertainment.  Whatever the distribution method, the audio series is a popular and powerful format for storytelling.

Part I (Saturday, December 3, 2-4pm):

  • A Brief History of Podcasting (2001-today)
  • Podcasting Today: Growth & Opportunity (based on many of the things I learned while attending the Podcast Movement Conf in Chicago this July)
  • The Stuff You Need (microphones, software etc)
  • The Narrative Podcast (what I teach at Cornell, based largely on Ira Glass’ formula for This American Life–character driven narratives which reveal universal themes)
  • Pitching Podcasts ( ideas, feedback) Participants would then create a podcast during the week .

Part II (Saturday, December 10, 2-4pm):

  • Listening and Critiquing. What worked, what didn’t,
  • How Can We Improve?
  • Where Do We Go From Here? ( In addition to the terrestrial platforms like Community Radio and NPR, there are a multitude of pod catchers like Libsyn and of course iTunes to host your show.
  • How Do You Find An Audience?

What to bring:

  • a laptop
  • Audacity, Garageband, or other editing software
  • at least one idea for a series of 10-12 minute podcast/features.

What to expect:

  • participation in both sessions
  • completion of homework between sessions (at least 4 hours)
